Unlike many other technology platforms, PROTĒAN™ is sustainable from creation through disposal. PROTĒAN™ is derived from plants and undergoes a simple, energy-efficient synthesis. This offers a significant contrast to alternatives like polylactic acid that are also derived from a renewable source, but must undergo a complicated, energy intensive synthesis process to compost. PROTĒAN™’s unique formula can also add strength to the base paper, enabling the use of lower-gauge material and supporting cost-savings for the entire supply chain.

When products that use PROTĒAN™ have reached the end of their useful life, manufacturers and consumers have several disposal options. In addition to being 100% biodegradable and compostable under normal conditions, PROTĒAN™ can be recycled in the regular stream of paper recyclables – no segregation is required. Since PROTĒAN™ is woven into the paper matrix rather than being applied as a separate film on the surface of the substrate, it will not separate from the paper during recycling, eliminating contamination concerns associated with conventional wax-, plastic- and silicone-based coatings.

Manufacturing Efficiency

PROTĒAN™ offers several time and energy-saving benefits during the manufacturing process. Many legacy technologies require large amounts of water to be driven off resulting in slowing down the coating and drying processes. PROTĒAN™ can run up to 20% faster with shortened coating and drying times when compared to these competitive technologies. Several PROTĒAN™ formulations are also capable of being converted into high solids coatings. PROTĒAN™ formulates well for industrial applications. Due to the composition, PROTĒAN™ offers excellent mill runnability since its composition will not get sticky or “gummy” and resists blocking. This is often a challenge for some barrier coating alternatives.
