Sustainability

As the world’s reliance on plastic has grown in the last several decades, so too has the amount of waste stemming from its use.

In 2015 alone, more than 300 million tons of plastic waste was generated. Dealing with this volume of waste is challenging, with most of it ending up in landfills, dumps or contaminating the environment.

According to a recent report from the United Nations Environment Program, if current consumption patterns and waste management practices continue, there will be around 12 billion metric tons of unrecycled plastic litter in landfills and the environment by 2050. Leading us to recognize how challenging recycling plastic is as majority of the refuse is treated as contaminated waste.

PROTĒAN goals

PROTĒAN® was developed to offer manufacturers an environmentally responsible choice by reducing the toll of plastic waste and the bioaccumulation of harmful fluorocarbons and numerous other petroleum-based packaging additives.

Our goal is to improve our health and the health of our planet by reducing global reliance on plastics and a variety of other non-green paper additives including, but not limited to, plasticizers waxes, acrylates, wet strength compounds like epichlorohydrin.

PROTĒAN is derived from plants and undergoes a simple, energy-efficient synthesis. This offers a significant contrast to alternatives like polylactic acid (PLA) that are also derived from a renewable source, but must undergo a complicated, energy intensive synthesis process to compost. PROTĒAN’s unique formula can also add strength to the base paper, enabling the use of lower-gauge material and supporting cost-savings for the entire supply chain.
